On what other instruments have y’all tried the SE mics?

Check out this interesting GearSlutz thread discussing SE3 on snare.

  1. Was planning on using the matched pair in XY for a violin on Tuesday. Does that seem reasonable? Where might I read (online) about the theory behind 1) how to set the angle between the mics, and 2) the distance from the source?

  2. Mike–

Google is your friend, search and you’ll find tons of info online about stereo micing.

Fellas, let’s do a side-by-side w/ the SE3 and the SR69 on a snare. That should be telling.

  3. Keep in mind that the proximity effect and pickup patterns for these two mics will be very different. Therefore, the differences between the two mics will vary (and possibly in drastic ways) as you vary the position of the mics relative to the snare drum.

If you’re gonna do this comparison, give yourself an extra ten minutes so you can move the mics around before you even consider postulating an opinion.

  4. This doesn’t really have anything to do with how the mics sound per se, but it’s worth mentioning that all the accessories in the SE3 kit are absolute pieces of shit. The stereo bar’s threaded nut broke off the bar after about three weeks of use, and both shockmounts are starting to come apart (these can probably be fixed with a small screwdriver, but I’m pretty sure the stereo bar’s history).
